Richard Holden has become North West Durham’s first ever Conservative MP, since the constituency’s creation in 1950, with a majority of 1144 votes.
Richard launched his election campaign on the 13th November (which you can read about here), following his nomination as the Conservative candidate. He immediately moved to Wolsingham and has spent the past two months campaigning in the constituency, visiting every single village, town and area in North West Durham. He has attended hustings events with other candidates and hosted cabinet ministers in the constituency as part of his campaign. Richard spent every day covering as much of the constituency as he could whatever the weather, speaking to people on the doorstep and in the street to find out their concerns, queries and hopes for North West Durham.
Commenting, Richard said ‘I cannot think of a higher honour than being elected as North West Durham’s first ever Conservative MP. I am in a total state of shock – the past few weeks have been a whirlwind of hard work, events and speaking to as many people as I can, and I am so glad that the hard work has paid off and that the real work is yet to come. North West Durham is a beautiful part of the country with so much history and so much to offer and the people that live here are simply fantastic. I cannot thank you all enough – everyone who worked for me, campaigned for me in the wind and the rain and most of all the people of North West Durham – thank you for putting your faith in me and for supporting me. I am going to do everything I can to make sure I don’t let you down and will spend the next few years doing everything I can to pay back your trust, both locally and in Parliament. The campaign has been a total joy and I can’t wait to meet more of you over the next few weeks and months. Any issues please drop me an email – I’d love to hear from all my constituents.’
