Help for the most vulnerable Ukrainians from the U.K. Government and how you at home can assist.
A statement from Richard Holden MP:
"None of us could have failed to be moved by what is happening to so many people.
"Lots of local people are thinking about what they can do to help the people of Ukraine. It has been amazing to see so many people stepping up to help in our towns and villages across North West Durham from collections to coffee mornings. I’ve also been contacted by lots of local people arranging support and willing to open their homes.
"Having spoken to both representatives from the Ukrainian and Polish Governments and charities working on the ground is clear that the best and simplest ways to help is to donate to the Disasters Emergency Committee Ukraine humanitarian appeal (https://www.dec.org.uk).
"The government is matching £25 million of public donations to this appeal for purely humanitarian support.
"If you are donating elsewhere, to ensure donation is made safely and effectively, you can check the charity’s name and registration number before sending any money.
"Separately, the Government is also supporting the Ukrainian military with defensive weapons. We were the first country to do so and will continue to assist them.
"Moreover, the government is directly ensuring that critical support is getting to those most in need - as you can see from the Health Secretary’s message below.
"Tomorrow further schemes will be announced about how you the U.K. is stepping up to help refugees. I’ll publish more details when they’re fully available tomorrow."
