The Boundary Commission has decided to split-up North West Durham.
Please read the following statement from Richard Holden MP:
"I am posting today with really very sad news about our North West Durham constituency. In its first iteration, some substantial tweaks were proposed to #NorthWestDurham but the bulk of the constituency stayed the same. However, following stage two of the review, the Boundary Commission has decided to split up North West Durham into four pieces and add them to other constituencies. Despite lobbying they have pretty much accepted the Labour Party’s proposal to its fullest extent. By dismembering North West Durham it means that another seat will survive in the Wearside area instead.
"This means that rather than the boundary population equalisation meaning some changes, instead there will be wholesale change.
1) Weardale, Tow Law and Crook all merge into the new Bishop Auckland seat.
2) Willington, the East Hedleyhope part of Deerness, and Esh, Satley and Langley Park are all pushed into the City of Durham seat.
3) Lanchester Ward, which goes from Muggleswick & Castleside to Burnhope, goes into the North Durham seat with Stanley and Chester-le-Street.
4) Then the Greater Consett (from Delves Lane and Moorside North) plus Dipton and Burnopfield all go north into a new Blaydon constituency.
"The changes will come in for any election that takes place following next summer. Usually after this stage two things decided are quite final but please do contact the Boundary Commission if you, like me, think that this proposal doesn’t make sense.
"This is obviously hugely sad news for me personally. It has been the honour of a life time to serve all of you all in the beautiful and historic North West Durham towns and villages.
"Nonetheless, PLEASE keep in mind, however, that I am your MP until the day the next general election kicks off.
"I will continue in my fight for you on a constituency basis with the individual issues you bring to me.
"And on my campaigns will keep pushing for the new 16 bed community hospital in Consett, to reopen historic railways from Consett-via Leadgate & Stanley- to Tyneside, and the Weardale line, the Bus Service Improvement Plan, getting more police officers on your streets, campaigning for school upgrades (like we’ve secured already at Witton-Le-Wear) and am driving for at Villa Real and elsewhere, the Levelling Up Bid for the Tow Law-Crook-Willington area, supporting bids from our local clubs and arts venues for funding, as well as a huge number of other locally focussed campaigns."
