Betty, a victim of the Post Office Horizon Scandal, gets a visit from local North West Durham MP.
"Betty ran the Post Office in Annfield Plain for years. I have visited her multiple times this year, to learn more about the strife she faced at the hands on her unfair managers.
"I caught up with her again a few days ago.
"Like hundreds of others, Betty was a victim of a a computer error in the Post Offices system (introduced in 1999) which was then covered up by the Post Office. This cover-up led to hundreds of innocent sub postmasters being branded criminals or even taking their own lives. I’ve been campaigning for sub postmasters, like Betty, since I was elected: (https://www.richardholden.org.uk/.../richard-holden...).
"The courts found that the Post Office were in the wrong and ordered compensation should be paid and following campaigns by MPs in a cross party group, in 2021 Ministers stepped in to ensure that all subpostmasters who were part of the original complaint would get full legal costs covered and not be left out. Today’s announcement extends that to allow for late applications too: (http://www.gov.uk/.../government-supports-postmasters...).
"The people in senior management at the post office, who covered up and made the lives of sub postmasters, like Betty, a living hell for years, need to face justice too. I’ll be campaigning for that in Parliament with colleagues from across the House of Commons."
